Hunters Point Kennel Information
INTENT &
PURPOSE
It is our goal to produce the
best possible hunting dogs and family companions. Our kennel is
operated on the philosophy of quality invested provides quality
received.
FACILITY
The kennel grounds occupy
approximately 2 ½ acres. We have two banks of adult kennels that
contain six 5' x 12' runs each. And six puppy runs of 4' x 12' each.
The kennel floors are concrete and on a 5 degree slope that drains
into a trough. The trough is connected to a 1000-gallon septic
system. The runs are divided by chain link fencing. The welping
areas are inside a metal building. There are three concrete runs of
8' x 16' inside and 8' x 8' outside. These are also connected to the
septic system. The concrete slopes and troughs make for easy and
thorough daily cleaning. We have an exercise and training area that
contains a one-acre pond.
HEALTH
PROGRAM
All of our dogs are fed
Eukanuba dog food. This was the result of a nutritional inquiry to
Purdue University and Ohio State University Schools of Veterinary
Medicine. The expense of feeding this top quality food is more than
offset by its results. All of our dogs are on Interceptor once a
month wormer and Advantage flea and tick control. All of our dogs
have their hips OFA certified and must score a good or excellent to
be bred. Annually our dogs receive rabies & parvo vaccinations and
their eyes are examined by a canine opthamalogist with the result
submitted to CERF for registration. Or puppies receive Interceptor
wormer at 3 weeks of age and their first Ft Dodge Puppy Shot (Duramune
DA2PP + CVK) at 5 weeks. We repeat the Ft Dodge Puppy Shot every two
weeks until they leave or reach 16 weeks. Dew claws are removed by
the pinch method, limiting scaring.
PUPPY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
Our puppy development program
begins with early neurological stimulation using the "Bio Sensor"
program. The "Bio Sensor" program was developed by the U.S. Military
for their war dog program. Later it became known to the public as
the "Super Dog" program. This program consists of five exercises
performed on the puppies daily from the third day of life through
the sixteenth day of life. The benefits from this program are:
- Improved cardiovascular performance
- Stronger heart beats
- Larger adrenal glands
- More tolerance to stress
- Greater resistance to disease
At the completion of the "Super Dog" exercises we
begin a temperament equalization program recommended by Purdue
University School of Veterinary Medicine. In very simplified terms
the program requires random grouping of the puppies away from mother
twice a day. This changes the dynamics of the litter allowing the
puppies to assume roles different from the norm in their small
groups. This continues through six weeks of age.
Feeding time for puppies is a time of high energy and drive. We use
this time to introduce problem-solving exercises to the puppies.
Daily we introduce different barriers between the puppies and their
food. The puppies are challenged to go under, over, around, or
through barriers to get to their food. This type of brain
stimulation is proven to actually increase the size of the cortex.
When the puppies reach their food we fire a 22 blank pistol to
imprint in their minds the association of gunfire with something
good, food. This noise conditioning makes the transition to the
field and the reward of a bird after gunfire easier.
At six weeks of age we introduce the pups, as a litter, to a clip
wing quail or chukar. The competitiveness of the group makes the
bird introduction a pleasant experience for all, leaving a positive
bird imprint in their minds.
It is important to note at this point that unstructured handling and
play by adults and children also takes place during this time to
promote normal human bonding and socialization.
A lot of experts feel the first six weeks is the most important time
for development in a dog's life. Newborn pups have their eyes
closed, have a limited digestive system that requires mothers
licking to function, depends on external sources for body heat, and
can only smell, suck, and crawl. At six weeks they see, walk, eat
and digest solid food, regulate their own body heat, play, reason,
and develop traits unique to themselves.
Studies have shown that the effectiveness of "jump start" exercises
during the first six weeks of life can never be duplicated again.
BREEDING STOCK
Hunters Point Kennel currently
owns, hunts, and breeds sixteen APLA Certified Pointers, one APLA
Master Pointer Retriever, and one APLA Grand Master Pointer
Retriever. That is more APLA titled dogs than any other pointing lab
kennel ! These dogs represent the "best of the best" pointing lab
bloodlines in the country. This pattern of success represents a high
standard of ability and temperament to be selected for our breeding
program. We retain pups from our own litters and purchase outside
pups every year. We start these pups and evaluate them for our
breeding program. They must be better than our current dogs to earn
the right to be placed in our program. We are dedicated to making a
great breed of dog even better. We feel a responsibility to the
breed that has brought us so much pleasure, and to you our client.
The purchase of a hunting companion is a serious investment in
training time, emotional attachment, and money. Accept nothing less
than hunter tested and APLA certified parents on both sides of your
pup.
SERVICE
Service after the sale of a
puppy is an area that is rarely discussed but can be very important.
A breeder must have that ability and the desire to provide post sale
service. The ability to provide service means being knowledgeable in
the areas of training, health and nutrition, canine behavior,
problem diagnosing, and hunting both upland birds and waterfowl. The
desire to provide service simply means that willingness to share our
knowledge for the benefit of our clients. Byron and I both stand
ready and able to provide post sale service.
LOCATION AND SHIPPING
Our kennel is located in
Salem, Indiana, which is 35 miles northwest of Louisville, Kentucky.
We ship puppies by air out of Louisville International Airport at
Standiford Field. Federal regulations require a puppy traveling
alone to be a minimum of 8 weeks of age. The charge for shipping by
air is based on the size of the kennel (200-puppy crate) and the
method of travel, regular air cargo or counter to counter. Distance
is not a consideration in the shipping cost. Regular air cargo
currently runs from $90.00 to $120.00 depending upon airlines.
Counter to counter currently runs from $163.00 to $170.00. A $45.00
deposit is required for the shipping crate and this deposit is
refunded when the crate is returned.
DEPOSIT POLICY
If we produce the puppy you
have chosen with regard to litter, color, and gender, you are
expected to complete the purchase. If you do not, the deposit is
forfeited or applied to a puppy in the future. If we do not produce
the puppy you have chosen with regard to litter, color, and gender
you have the following options:
- A full refund of deposit
- Choice of another available puppy
- Re-apply deposit to a future litter
PUPPY SELECTION POLICY
Deposits are recorded when RECEIVED. This order of deposits received
is also the order of selection of pups. If you are coming to the
kennel to make your own selection you must arrive on the date and at
the time you are assigned. If you are unable to arrive at your
scheduled time, we will make the selection for you. This is
necessary in order to be fair to those making travel plans in
advance. Puppies being shipped will be selected in the appropriate
order based upon instructions from the purchaser. Puppies being
picked up can leave at six weeks of age. Puppies being shipped must
be eight weeks of age as per federal regulations.
GUARANTEE
We provide a written guarantee against genetic hip or eye disease
for your puppy's first 26 months. If the conditions of the guarantee
are invoked, you may keep the original dog if you supply proof of
sterilization, and we will give you another dog of equal or better
breeding at no cost. Breeding the dog before 24 months of age will
void the guarantee.
