What traits make good hunting dogs? Breeding only counts for a portion of hunting ability. What is needed is a combination of intelligence, agility, patience, and responsiveness to your command. The right balance of these factors can change the entire dynamic of the hunt.

The most popular hunting breeds are the German Shorthaired and Wirehaired Pointers, and Golden and Labrador Retrievers. Although the former are known for bird detection and the latter for their bird recovery, it would be wrong to say that "All Pointers are better finders than Retrievers," and vice versa. After all, it is not the size of the dog in the hunt, but the size of the hunt in the dog.
